Nutrition in Perimenopause & Menopause

Your Perimenopause journey can start as young as your late 30s but you may remain unaware that this is the cause of your symptoms for some time.  By the time your periods have stopped altogether and you are officially in menopause, you are likely to know exactly what is going on.

The changes that occur in a woman’s body around menopause are significant. Some women experience mild symptoms whilst for others, symptoms are debilitating. HRT is a help to some but it’s not a panacea and many women still experience symptoms despite replacing their hormones.  For others, HRT is not an option.  The good news is that there are lots of dietary and lifestyle strategies we can employ to help.

No two women are the same and whilst general strategies for menopause can have many positive impacts, they may not be enough to help all of us. This is when an individualised nutritional approach is needed.   Nutritional Therapy takes a holistic view, taking into account a person’s health history, their existing symptoms and medication including HRT. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another and factors such as gut health, sleep, stress and our own genetic make-up all play a part.

Through changes in our diet and with the use of supplements and sometimes testing, we can bring symptoms into line.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Weight gain
  • Memory issues
  • Brain fog
  • Regular and heavy periods
  • Loss of libido
  • Vaginal atrophy/painful sex

  • Insomnia
  • Breast soreness
  • Anxiety
  • Palpitations
  • Joint pains
  • Hot flashes and night sweats

These are the classic symptoms but all women are affected differently and to different degrees.  Some may have underlying or concomitant health conditions or susceptibilities that contribute to symptoms.  This is why personalised nutrition programmes can be really beneficial. In many cases these symptoms can be greatly improved with food and lifestyle choices.

Though not necessary, testing can be useful to help direct your nutrition programme.  The Dutch Test stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones.  It is particularly useful as it offers a comprehensive profile of sex hormones as well as your adrenal profile, melatonin levels which together help identify potential imbalances and direct your plan more effectively.
